Antifreeze is really 'anti-boil and anti-corrosion'

In Bangladesh the freeze protection is rarely the point — the same glycol chemistry raises the boiling point of the coolant and carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the radiator, water pump and engine passages. Plain water offers none of that protection and promotes rust and scale.

Maintenance essentials

A cooling system that runs clean protects the engine's most expensive components. If coolant is disappearing or changing colour rapidly, have the system pressure-tested at a workshop.

• Use the coolant technology the manufacturer specifies — coolant families should not be mixed.
• Dilute concentrates with clean (ideally demineralised) water at the ratio on the data sheet.
• Check level regularly at the reservoir, only opening the system when cold.
• Replace coolant at the interval in the handbook — inhibitors deplete over time.
