When to Replace Transmission Fluid

Manual gear oil, ATF and CVT fluid all age. Here's how to know when a change is due — and why the exact specification matters.

Transmission fluid is not 'lifetime' in severe service

Many handbooks describe automatic transmission fluid as 'long-life', but the same handbooks define a severe-service schedule for hot climates and heavy traffic — which describes most driving in Bangladesh. Following the severe-service interval protects the transmission, which is one of the most expensive components to repair.

Signs a change may be due

These symptoms can have other causes — have a qualified workshop diagnose before assuming fluid alone is the fix.

  • Delayed or harsh gear engagement
  • Darkened or burnt-smelling fluid on the dipstick (where fitted)
  • Shuddering during acceleration in automatics or CVTs
  • High mileage since the last documented change

The specification is non-negotiable

Unlike engine oil, transmission fluids are highly specific: ATF types, CVT fluids and manual gear oils are not interchangeable. Using the wrong fluid can damage a transmission quickly. Always match the exact specification named in the handbook, and verify it against the fluid's official technical data sheet.
